What floor tape is used for
Floor tape marks where people walk, where vehicles drive and where materials belong: aisles, forklift lanes, walkways, staging and storage areas, work cells, hazard zones, and keep-clear areas in front of electrical panels and fire equipment. Rolls handle lines and boundaries. Die-cut shapes handle corners, points and equipment outlines, where cutting from a roll wastes time and tape.
Choosing a width
- 1 inch: small equipment outlines, tool boards, shelves and benches.
- 2 inch: workstation borders, cart parking and 5S equipment footprints.
- 3 inch: zone boundaries and storage areas.
- 4 inch: the common choice for main aisles and walkways, because it reads clearly from a forklift seat.
- 6 inch: busy travel lanes and pedestrian crossings.
Floor marking colors: the rules and the conventions
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176(a) requires that permanent aisles and passageways be appropriately marked where mechanical handling equipment is used. It does not specify a color, width or material, and OSHA Instruction STD 01-01-004 (1978) says the intent of "appropriately marked" is not to restrict markings to one method. OSHA's color code in 1910.144 makes red the basic color for fire protection equipment, danger and stop, and yellow the basic color for caution and physical hazards. Everything else is industry convention, mostly ANSI Z535.1 and 5S practice, not a federal requirement.

Consistency matters more than the exact assignments. If yellow means aisle in receiving, it should mean aisle in shipping too.
How much tape to order
Most rolls are 100 feet, though 1 inch rolls are 50 feet, anti-slip 60 feet and reflective 75 feet. Count total length of line, not aisle length. A 200 foot aisle marked on both sides needs 400 feet, or four 100 foot rolls, plus about 10 percent for corners and mistakes. For dashed lines, multiply by the share that is tape: a 6 inch dash with a 4 inch gap is 60 percent. Send us your layout and we will do the math.

Frequently asked questions
Does OSHA require floor marking in a warehouse?
Yes, where mechanical handling equipment such as forklifts is used. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176(a) requires permanent aisles and passageways to be appropriately marked. It does not specify a color, width or material, and a 1978 OSHA instruction says "appropriately marked" is not meant to restrict markings to one method.
Does OSHA require a specific tape color or line width?
No. The widely quoted 2 to 6 inch line and 4 foot aisle figures come from a May 15, 1972 OSHA memo on aisle markings, which said "any width 2 inches or more is considered acceptable" and that lines may be any color as long as they clearly define the aisle. OSHA now labels that memo an archived document that no longer represents OSHA policy. They are reasonable rules of thumb, not current requirements.
How thick is Mighty Line floor tape?
50 mil, with beveled edges so wheels roll over the line instead of catching it. Mighty Line says its tape is seven times thicker than the average floor tape.
Will floor tape leave residue when we remove it?
Mighty Line says its standard tape leaves minimal residue, which is a big reason facilities pick it over paint when layouts change. Frigid freezer tape uses a permanent adhesive that Mighty Line says is very difficult to remove once applied.
What is the difference between tape rolls and die-cut shapes?
Rolls are for continuous lines. Die-cut angles, Ts, dots and corners are pre-cut for boundaries and outlines, so you are not cutting and mitering tape by hand.
