Private-label products are typically those manufactured or provided by one company for offer under another company’s brand. Private-label goods and services are available in a wide range of industries from wine, candles, food and cosmetics.
Historically, private-labeling was restricted to large manufacturers and these products were sold to regional chain stores. Now, with technology improvements, private-labeling and product customization is wide-open for smaller manufacturers.
According to the Private Label Manufacturer’s Association (PLMA) there are four categories of private-label manufacturers:
- Large national brand manufacturers that utilize their expertise and excess plant capacity to supply store brands.
- Small quality manufacturers who specialize in particular product lines and concentrate on producing store brands exclusively
- Major retailers and wholesalers that own their own manufacturing facilities and provide store-brand products for themselves
- Small or regional brand manufacturers that produce private-label products for specific markets.
The beauty of private labeling is the ability to expand your brand by creating a value-added store-brand program for the retailer. For small manufacturers who have not yet achieved brand-name recognition, offering private labeling solves this problem instantly. When products are branded under a store name, the consumer immediately recognizes the brand which gives the private-label product credibility. If the store has a great reputation for quality products, the consumer will immediately transfer that reputation to the product.
In addition to on-line webtailers and brick and mortar retailers, other opportunities for private labeling are fund raising and working with event planners.

We recently spoke with an owner of a hair and skin-care products company who has been working with faith-based organizations in Chicago. He is taking the top selling items from his product line and is branding them with the names of the different organizations so their members can use these as a fund-raiser.
Another company takes their nutraceuticals and brands them for local and regional health food stores and medical offices. The possibilities for increasing your market share through private labeling are endless.
These smaller run lengths have been a challenge up until now.
With the Epson ColorWorks printer series, label printing has become extremely affordable.
